Personal History
Not since Dr. Charles Reed in the early twentieth century has anyone been associated more with Westborough history than Kristina Nilson Allen. Allen has been an active leader of the Westborough Historical Society, has conducted countless historical programs and tours for both adults and young children, and is a seminal author of Westborough history.
Before Allen wrote On the Beaten Path in 1984, the only other comprehensive monographic work on Westborough history was The History of Westborough, Massachusetts by Heman Packard DeForest and Edward Craig Bates, published in 1891. Many Massachusetts towns have published histories dating to the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, but Allen is one of the few local historians to take on the monumental task of writing a new, updated history of their town decades later. Westborough is indeed lucky to have had such a formidable advocate for its local history, otherwise, much of its history from the twentieth century would have been lost or neglected.
Allen has been active in town politics and organizations throughout much of her adult life. She served on the Westborough Select Board for twelve years and several times as its chair. She was also a leader of the Westborough Historical Society, a Library Trustee for the Westborough Public Library, an incorporating director and president of the Westborough Community Land Trust, and a co-chair of the 495/MetroWest Corridor Partnership, among others. Starting in 1982, she worked at Clark University in various offices relating to publications, marketing, and development before retiring in 2005. Throughout much of her professional career, she has also worked as a freelance writer and editor for numerous publications and organizations.
Scope and Content Note
The Kristina Nilson Allen Papers is a mix of Allen’s writings covering every major period of Westborough history and an eclectic mix of historical materials, most of which are from 1970s and into the 2020s and tend to be underrepresented in Westborough archives.
Some of the most notable materials in the collection include:
- A host of articles and notes by Allen about numerous Westborough history topics.
- Biographical material about important Westborough people, most notably the Forbes family, Olympian Nikki Stone, and Women of Westborough.
- Historical records and documents relating to the library addition, festivals and celebrations, and various Westborough organizations.
- An eclectic collection of advertising and other ephemera dating from the nineteenth and into the twenty-first centuries.
